Since 1905, Cathedral High School has provided a transformative Catholic education to the young women of New York City. In honor of the 120th anniversary of Cathedral High School this year, we were delighted to celebrate our decades-long history with a special event celebrating the past, present, and future of Cathedral!
Throughout the evening, fabulous student performers brought each decade to life. The songs and dances brought back fond memories of our alumnae's high school years, and our joyful audience had a blast singing and dancing along. Student speakers provided wonderful highlights of school history over our 120 years of vibrant history, capturing the spirit of Cathedral.
One highlight of the event included a ‘get up and dance’ moment brought to us by a group of sophomore students representing the 1980s; these Cathedralites performed iconic moves from Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and then got the whole audience to stand up and learn the dance moves with them. They even invited a couple of alumnae on stage to perform with them!
The 1960s dancers were another highlight: instead of dancing to 1960s classic rock, students choreographed international dances that, as a multicultural group, harkened back to a specific event in our school’s history. In 1967 and 1968, CHS hosted the ‘Festival of Nations,’ a multicultural event honoring the dozens of nationalities that represented the student body at the time. At our Dancing through the Decades event, Cathedralites performed dances with roots in Nicaragua, Ireland, Haiti, and Africa!
We would like to extend a heartfelt and enthusiastic thank you to the many faculty members, staff members, and dozens of students who have made this show possible. A special shoutout goes to our four dance clubs: the Cathedral Constellations Dance Company, STEP Team, Cheer Team, and Latin and Ballroom Club. Finally, thank you to Ms. Aybar, Ms. Amanda Edge, and Ms. Cynthia Garcia for their dedication, time, and talent.
For those who could not join us, we missed you and hope to see you at a future event. You are always welcome home at Cathedral, especially as we celebrate 120 years!
