1. Why is Cathedral High School closing?
After a comprehensive financial review, extensive deliberation, and consultation with the
Archdiocese of New York, the Board of Trustees concluded that ongoing financial
challenges make it impossible to sustain operations beyond June 2026. Declining
enrollment, rising operational costs, and limited fundraising success have created an
economic imbalance that cannot be corrected without compromising our mission or the
quality of education we provide.
2. When will the school officially close?
Cathedral High School will close at the conclusion of the 2025–2026 academic year, in
June 2026.
3. What will happen to current students?
The Board’s top priority is to support students and families during this transition.
Guidance and resources will be provided to ensure that every student is placed in a
school of their choice. The Department of Education of the Archdiocese of New York,
along with its partner schools, will assist with this process.
4. What steps have been taken to try to keep the school open?
Over the past three years, Cathedral has made measurable academic progress and
renewed its commitment to Catholic identity. Efforts such as the Flourish Campaign
have helped strengthen fundraising. However, these efforts have not been enough to
overcome: Nearly a 50% enrollment decline since 2023–2024 and rising operational
costs, including rent at the current location.
5. How will families be informed about transfer options?
Detailed information sessions will be provided for families beginning in fall 2025. The
Board and school leadership will work closely with the Archdiocese of New York to
identify Catholic high schools and other options that best fit each student’s academic
and personal needs. In addition, a High School Open House Fair will be held at
Cathedral in the coming weeks.
6. What does this mean for faculty and staff?
The Board and administration are deeply grateful for the dedication of faculty and staff.
Support will be provided during the transition, and the Archdiocese will assist in
exploring opportunities at other Catholic schools when possible.
7. Will the school year 2025–2026 continue as normal?
Yes. Cathedral High School remains fully committed to providing an excellent academic
and faith-filled experience for students throughout its final year. Classes,
extracurriculars, athletics, and community traditions will continue.
8. What will happen to the legacy of Cathedral High School?
While the school will close in June 2026, the mission and values of Cathedral High
School—Faith, Respect, Integrity, Hard Work, and Service—will continue to live on
through its graduates, families, and the broader community. Alumni, benefactors, and
friends will be invited to celebrate and honor the school's legacy during its final year.
9. Will there be opportunities for the community to gather and celebrate the
school?
Yes. Plans are being developed for events during the 2025–2026 academic year to
honor the school’s history, celebrate its impact, and bring the community together in
gratitude.
10. Who can I contact for more information?
Families, alumni, and community members with questions may contact the school’s
main office at 212-688-1545. Updates will also be shared regularly via school
communications.
Frequently Asked Questions regarding Scholarships through
the Inner-City Scholarship Fund and the Children’s
Scholarship Fund.
1. What is the requirement for Inner-City Scholarship Fund students at Cathedral?
Students who currently receive financial support through the Inner-City Scholarship
Fund or the Children’s Scholarship Fund must complete the 2025–2026 academic year
at Cathedral for the Fund to fulfill its financial commitment.
2. What happens if a student leaves Cathedral before the end of the 2025–2026 school year?
If a student withdraws before completing the full academic year, the
Inner-City Scholarship Fund will not be able to provide financial assistance for that year.
3. What support will be available after Cathedral closes in June 2026?
The Inner-City Scholarship Fund and the Children’s Scholarship Fund will work with
families to provide guidance and resources for students transitioning to other schools,
beginning in the fall of 2026. Additional details will be shared with recipients.
