Letter from the Board of Trustees

Dear Cathedral Community,

I write to you today to share the current state of Cathedral High School. On behalf of the Board, I want to begin by acknowledging the extraordinary dedication, resilience, and hard work that

have been demonstrated by our entire community over the past three years. This collective effort has contributed meaningfully to Cathedral’s growth and ongoing flourishing.

Under the exceptional leadership of our beloved Principal, Jessica Aybar, and the unwavering

commitment of our dedicated faculty, Cathedral has seen steady academic progress. We are

proud to report measurable gains in Global Studies, U.S. History & Government, Chemistry,

Geometry, and Algebra II. These achievements reflect not only instructional excellence but also

our students’ growing engagement and academic confidence.

At the same time, there has been a renewed focus on our Catholic identity and the strengthening of school culture. The entire community came together in recommitting to Cathedral’s five core values: Faith, Respect, Integrity, Hard Work, and Service—values that continue to be exemplified in the lives of our students. 

Over the past several years, the Board has taken significant steps to reform and strengthen the

school’s foundation. These efforts included restructuring our governance model, improving

internal controls, and initiating strategic reforms across administration and finance.

In response to a longstanding structural financial deficit, the Board implemented critical cost-

saving measures and capped spending, while making targeted investments in development to increase revenue.

In 2022, a President was hired to lead Cathedral’s advancement efforts, and with the guidance of CCS Fundraising, we launched the Flourish Campaign to support long-term sustainability. While these efforts have sparked revitalization across many areas of Cathedral’s operations, they have not been enough to reverse the school’s financial trajectory.

This decision was not made lightly. It follows months of in-depth analysis, consultation with

financial and educational experts, and conversations with the Archdiocese of New York. We are

profoundly aware of the emotional weight this carries for students, families, faculty, staff,

alumnae, and all those who love Cathedral.

Several critical factors have led to this decision:

 Enrollment Decline: Since the 2023–2024 academic year, Cathedral has experienced an

enrollment decline of nearly 50%.

 Rising Costs: The operational cost of running the school, including rent at our current

location continues to place a significant strain on our operating budget.

 Fundraising Limits: Despite considerable investments in development, revenue growth

has not kept pace with operational needs.

 Competitive Landscape: The presence of multiple all-girls Catholic high schools in the

area—many with superior facilities and more central locations—has made it increasingly

difficult for Cathedral to compete for prospective students.

Taken together, these realities create a structural and financial imbalance that cannot be corrected without compromising Cathedral’s mission or the quality of education we provide.

In the months ahead, the Board’s top priority will be supporting our students and families

through this transition. We are committed to working closely with families to ensure every

student is placed in another school of their choosing and receives the guidance and resources

needed for a smooth transfer.

To our faculty and staff: thank you for your unwavering dedication. To our students and families: thank you for your trust and faith. To our alumnae, benefactors, and community partners: thank you for standing by Cathedral through generations of service and success.

Though this chapter is coming to a close, the legacy of Cathedral High School—the values we’ve instilled, the lives we’ve shaped, and the community we’ve built—will live on.

Querida Comunidad Escolar de Cathedral,

Les escribo hoy para compartirles el estado actual de la Secundaria Cathedral. A nombre de la
Junta Directiva, quiero comenzar reconociendo la extraordinaria dedicación, resiliencia y trabajo duro que ha demostrado toda nuestra comunidad durante los últimos tres años. Este esfuerzo colectivo ha contribuido significativamente al crecimiento y la prosperidad continua de Cathedral.

Bajo el liderazgo excepcional de nuestra querida directora escolar, Jessica Aybar, y el
compromiso inquebrantable de nuestra dedicada facultad, Cathedral ha experimentado un
progreso académico constante. Nos enorgullece informar avances medibles en Estudios
Globales, Historia y Gobierno de los Estados Unidos, Química, Geometría y Álgebra II. Estos
logros reflejan no solo la excelencia educativa, sino también el creciente compromiso y la
confianza académica de nuestras estudiantes.

Al mismo tiempo, se ha renovado el enfoque en nuestra identidad católica y el fortalecimiento de la cultura escolar. Toda la comunidad se unió para renovar su compromiso con los cinco valores fundamentales de Cathedral: Fe, Respeto, Integridad, Trabajo Arduo y Servicio, valores que siguen ejemplificándose en la vida de nuestras estudiantes.

En los últimos años, la Junta ha tomado medidas significativas para reformar y fortalecer la base de la escuela. Estas iniciativas incluyeron la reestructuración de nuestro modelo de gobernanza, la mejora de los controles internos y la implementación de reformas estratégicas en los ámbitos administrativo y financiero.

En respuesta a un déficit financiero estructural de larga duración, la Junta implementó medidas críticas de ahorro de costos y limitó el gasto, al tiempo que realizaba inversiones específicas en desarrollo para aumentar los ingresos.

En 2022, se contrató a un presidente para liderar las iniciativas de desarrollo de Cathedral y, bajo la dirección de CCS Fundraising, lanzamos la Campaña Flourish para apoyar la sostenibilidad a largo plazo. Si bien estos esfuerzos han impulsado la revitalización en muchas áreas operacionales de Cathedral, no han sido suficientes para revertir la trayectoria financiera de la escuela.

Tras una revisión financiera exhaustiva y una extensa deliberación, la Junta ha determinado, en colaboración con la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York, con gran pesar, que la Escuela Secundaria Cathedral no podrá continuar sus operaciones más allá del año académico 2025-2026. La escuela cerrará antes del inicio del año escolar 2026-2027.

Esta decisión no se tomó a la ligera. Es el resultado de meses de análisis exhaustivo, consultas
con expertos financieros y educativos, y conversaciones con la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York.
Somos profundamente conscientes del peso emocional que esto conlleva para las estudiantes, las familias, el profesorado, el personal, las ex-alumnas y todos cuantos aman a Cathedral.

Varios factores críticos han llevado a esta decisión:

 Disminución de la Matrícula: Desde el año académico 2023-2024, Cathedral ha
experimentado una disminución de la matrícula de casi el 50%.
 Aumento de Costos: El costo operacional para el funcionamiento de la escuela, incluido
el alquiler en nuestra ubicación actual, continúa ejerciendo una presión significativa sobre
nuestro presupuesto operacional.
 Límites de Recaudación de Fondos: A pesar de las considerables inversiones en
desarrollo, el aumento de los ingresos no ha seguido el ritmo de las necesidades
operacionales.
 Panorama Competitivo: La presencia de múltiples escuelas secundarias católicas solo
para chicas en el área (muchas con instalaciones superiores y ubicaciones más céntricas)
ha hecho que sea cada vez más difícil para Cathedral competir por potenciales nuevas
estudiantes.

En conjunto, todas estas realidades crean un desequilibrio estructural y financiero que no se
puede corregir sin comprometer la misión de Cathedral ni la calidad de la educación que
brindamos.

En los próximos meses, la prioridad principal de la Junta será apoyar a nuestras estudiantes y
familias en esta transición. Nos comprometemos a colaborar estrechamente con las familias para garantizar que cada estudiante sea ubicada en la escuela de su elección y reciba la orientación y los recursos necesarios para una transferencia sin contratiempos.

A nuestra facultad y personal: gracias por su inquebrantable dedicación. A nuestras estudiantes y familias: gracias por su confianza y fe. A nuestras ex-alumnas, benefactores y colaboradores de la comunidad: gracias por apoyar a Cathedral durante generaciones de servicio y éxito.

Aunque este capítulo está llegando a su fin, el legado de la Escuela Secundaria Cathedral—los
valores que hemos inculcado, las vidas que hemos formado y la comunidad que hemos
construido—pervivirá.
