ASL and Art students recently visited the Whitney Museum of American Art to experience the artworks of Christine Sun Kim. Kim’s art communicates the complexities of communication as a Deaf artist.
The students enjoyed class discussions and exposure to new varieties of art. Azureya D. ’26 reflected on the richness of sign language, noting “how the same sign can have numerous meanings.”
Inspired by Kim’s exhibit, students from Ms. Chen’s art classes and Ms. Payne’s ASL classes created original works.
ASL students replicated pieces by renowned Deaf De’VIA artists, deepening their understanding of Deaf culture and artistic expression.
Art students created self portraits in which they used body language to convey a particular aspect of themselves. The students painted themselves in a realist style, paying close attention to values, color, and the setting.
Thank you, Ms. Chen and Mrs. Payne, for organizing this visit and guiding our students in creative, meaningful reflection.
